Discover Dornoch

Nov 02, 2021

Just an hour north of Inverness, and 5 minutes off the famous NC500, it is home to possibly the best golf course in the World (Royal Dornoch - with 4 other excellent courses within 30 minutes’ drive). But if you’re not a golfer, nae bother! There are glorious and deserted golden, sandy beaches which stretch for miles, plus astonishing wildlife and spectacular scenery. (We can boast hundreds of seals basking in Loch Fleet literally on a daily basis).

There are countless opportunities for Highland adventures, walking, swimming, cycling, paddle-boarding, canoeing, riding and fishing in Sutherland, the UK’s least populous county.

Despite a population of less than 2,000, Dornoch itself is an ancient and beautiful Royal Burgh, built in sandstone around its 13th Century Cathedral, Bishop’s Palace, Courthouse and Jail. With a thriving and welcoming Highland community, it’s a foodie hot-spot, with excellent restaurants showcasing exceptional Scottish ingredients, (particularly seafood) and over 20 independent retailers, with unique and varied offerings which range from top-class spa experiences and designer clothes - to great books and local art!

In the Summer there are outdoor markets on the Cathedral Green and The Pipe Band plays every Saturday evening in the Square. In August the town holds its ever-popular Highland Games.

Situated in the heart of malt whisky distilling country, Dornoch is home to an internationally acclaimed whisky cellar and bar, and holds an annual whisky festival every October.

All this, and great weather too! The Dornoch micro-climate ensures the area has about the SAME annual rainfall as in London. Add this to our coastal situation and we can guarantee practically no midges! - What are you waiting for?!
