The Lake District in Cumbria has a special place in the hearts of the English, and not just due to its designation as an ‘AONB’ (Area Of Natural Beauty). Rolling hills, expansive lakes and great history barely gives a flavour of the celebrated National Park. Books such as 'Swallows and Amazons' capture the romance, innocence and beauty of this area wonderfully, and have long captured the imagination of domestic and international tourists.
Indeed, the Lake District has remained relatively untouched over the years, providing a rural beauty spot unlike anywhere else in the UK, and perhaps the world. Whilst there are scattered settlements throughout the Lake District, they are broken up by taws, lakes and rural pasture; providing a sense of seclusion, whilst maintaining great links to the outside world. Our range of luxury cottages near Windermere, in the heart of the Lake District, offer an idyllic mixture of rural living, whilst offering great connections to the rest of the UK.
It’s no wonder that the Lake District is one of the great walking locations in the UK. 2000 km of footpaths criss-cross the National Park, up Taws and around lakes. Glacial valleys and lakes provide an incredible backdrop for tourists to enjoy whilst making the most of the great outdoors - making our luxury cottages the perfect base of operations for a hiking trip.
Formed thousands of years ago by glacial erosion, England’s largest natural lake is one of the prettiest locations in all of the UK. Shaped like a ribbon, the lake stretches from Lakeside to Ambleside, passing by the picturesque town of Windermere. Green hills flank this geographical icon, along with a railway line, providing easy access. Our selection of luxury cottages near Windermere also provide great access links to Ullswater (the second largest lake in the Lake District).
Sailing, swimming and walking are extremely popular. Indeed, there are 5 large boating clubs along Lake Windermere. The Great North Swim takes place annually, drawing in lots of hardy individuals who swim 1.6 km through the frigid waters of Lake Windermere in September. There are plenty of activities to take part in across the length of the lake.
It’s no surprise that Lake Windermere has been in the background of popular culture for decades. As mentioned above; Beatix Potter, Swallows and Amazons and even ITV’s Coronation Street have chosen Lake Windermere as the setting for Drama, Horror or Soap Operas. Lake Windermere’s appeal is universal and our luxury cottages put you in the heart of it - with Wordsworth's home and museum one of many attractions for the literary minded nearby.
Handpicked Cottages is proud to offer a great range of luxury cottages near Windermere and across Cumbria and the Lake District. Whether you’re looking to relax in a hot-tub or experience the best of the Great British outdoors, we have the perfect getaway for you.
Here are just two fabulous cottages, on or not far from Windermere:
