Our stylish 19th century house lies in the conservation area heart of this picture postcard fishing village. We provide the perfect base for discovering the many delights of the area such as quaint fishing villages, the Fife Coastal Path and historic St Andrews – the home of golf.
The Posthouse is a spacious middle and top floor property sleeping 5 in two double and one single bedrooms with 2 bathrooms, one with a freestanding bath. The bright mid-floor sitting room opens into an open plan kitchen/diner, and on the top floor there is a small sitting room/library with views across the rooftops to the sea.
We provide unlimited fibre wifi, an extensive welcome pack including sparkling wine (champagne for winter weekends), Siabann Scottish luxury toiletries and many other extras.
We are very dog friendly and were chosen as a 2013 Feature Property by Your Dog Magazine, but REGRET NOT SUITABLE for under 6s except babies. Parking is free all year – often at the front door.
A relaxing and well-equipped home from home…
We have tried to create the perfect environment to relax and enjoy your holiday.
The house is full of special touches like local artworks, photographs (mostly by David), Scottish fabrics, Swedish throws, down duvets and Designer Guild wallpapers. We have retained many original features such as the pine staircase and woodwork, but added oak and tiled floors and quality furnishings.
After a rewarding day out it’s lovely to relax in our bright sitting room with its
bay window overlooking the whitewashed and stone houses that form the quiet residential part of Crail High Street. On cold days light the coal effect gas fire and enjoy one of our extensive collection of DVDs – or log into your Netflix account on our smart TV.
While away an evening with a glass of prosecco from our welcome pack in our cosy top floor study/library. There you can slow the pace with one of our extensive collection of hardback books and games.
Crail & around
Crail is a quiet, mostly residential, south facing village with pretty gardens, seaside walks and 18 century lanes leading down to the much photographed 17th-century harbour (cooked local lobsters available in season).
The East Neuk, the local name for East Fife, is well known to Scottish visitors but largely unknown to visitors from further afield and abroad. They are often surprised by how unspoilt and slow paced it is, particularity outside the summer - and by how dry it is (allegedly the sunniest part of Scotland).
From the house there are lovely all year walks along Fife Coastal Path which runs in either direction, 183 kms in total). Walking west, the path connects the various East Neuk fishing villages, Cellardyke, Anstruther, Pittenweem, St Monans and Elie. Each have a different character and between them offer a range of cafes restaurants and galleries. Try using the excellent local bus service for one-way walks.
Nearby beautiful sandy beaches are perfect for a picnic or a paddle (or even a swim!). We particularly recommend Kingsbarns (2 miles) St Andrews and Tentsmuir.
Golfers are spoilt for choice, and St Andrews - the home of Golf - is just a 15 minute drive. Play at our 4 local courses, Balcomie (Crail Golfing Society, the 7th oldest club in the world) and Kingsbarns. Or at one of the 25 courses within a 15 mile radius, from the iconic St Andrews Old Course (book well ahead!) to the small scale friendly 9 hole at next door Anstruther.
As well as golf and beaches, the buzzing university town of St Andrews offers many opportunities for shopping and delicious lunches or dinners.
Further afield, drive to Leuchars Station (30 mins) and take the regular fast service direct to Princes Street in the centre of Edinburgh (60mins). or Dundee (20 minutes).
Ardross farm shop between St Monans and Elie provides a great venue to stock up on ingredients to make a delicious meal at home. The East Pier Smokehouse at St Monans sells delicious locally caught langoustine, mackerel and seabass to eat in or take out. For that special meal out visit St Andrews (25 minutes by car) or the Michelin starred Peat Inn. Enjoy a casual pub meal a stone’s throw from the house at the dog friendly Golf Hotel or in next door Anstruther – also home to the famous award winning Anstruther Fish Bar.
For eating in, enjoy a family meal or dinner for 2 in our well-equipped kitchen/diner, with Royal Doulton crockery & cutlery, and crystal wine glasses.
As much as possible we use organic and/or Fairtrade sustainable products for our welcome packs, and by Spring 2020 virtually all our lighting has been (or is being) converted to low energy LED lighting.
As animal lovers, we are also delighted to donate £5 from every booking to the Big Life Foundation who do excellent work stopping elephant poaching on the Kenya/Tanzania border.
Last but not least, we are proud to give work to local housekeepers and tradespeople, and that our year-round occupancy rates bring visitors to support local shops and businesses.
