William Gilpin - 250 Years of Tourism in the Wye Valley

2020 is the 250 anniversary since William Gilpin’s tour of the Wye Valley in 1770. With possibly one of the very first examples of a holiday brochure “Observations On The River Wye” was a detailed narrative of his journey which along with his own illustrations was published in 1782. This became extremely popular with the gentry of the day and led to the start of what has been 250 years of tourism to this incredibly beautiful part of the UK.
