Actually, getting a change of scene in a family bubble with our loved ones is probably something all of us could do with right now. The difficulty is getting somewhere that appeals to everyone. So, to help you decide, here’s a quick guide of our most popular handpicked cottages for 6 locations and their award-winning highlights:
It’s more than nice in Norfolk – it’s positively charming, thanks to its ‘big skies’ and those fabulous tidal salt marshes. And it’s a fab spot for grabbing some healthy outdoor air. Go beachcombing with the dog anywhere along the 90 miles of unspoilt coast (later hide from the rest of the family between the tall, swaying marram grass of the dunes). Or, explore the beaches by pedalling along the coastal paths. Now, that’ll blow the cobwebs away!
Then again, you could all stay together and relax on a barge trip down the beautiful Norfolk Broads waterways. There is a whole 125 miles of lock-free sailing to pack into your holiday, after all.
Twitchers in the family will delight in the sheer volume and variety of marsh birds to be found in the area. They can also find colourful kingfishers on the waterways and even peregrine falcons in Norwich Cathedral during the summer months.
Well, we tried. But when it comes to coastal get-aways, there really is nowhere better than Cornwall. Granted, the beaches were busy in the summer, but rest-assured it’s only the hardy sorts that will venture onto the sands in autumn and winter.
And what a selection of beaches there are. Better still, there are some astounding Handpicked cottages for 6 in the area. Choose to stay in a secluded cottage on the North Cornwall coast, farmhouse in Helston or an old vicarage in Wadebridge. Then again, there is a cute cottage in Mousehole or a rather upmarket lodge in Porthtowan. Entirely your choice…
Handpicked cottages for 6: Highland Hideaway
Yes, the weather may be a touch colder over the border in Scotland but personally we like to describe it as ‘bracing.’ The country is dotted with magnificent mountains and spectacular lochs (there’s also, allegedly, a monster in one). Whether you head for stunning Loch Lomond (not the monster one) or further north to the beautiful Isle of Skye with its own micro-climate and where it’s not uncommon to get four seasons in one day, you’re bound to find your own breath-taking beauty spot to settle on.
Those who decry hill walking for a more leisurely sampling of the whiskey that Scotland’s islands have to offer won’t be disappointed either. There are 120 whiskey distilleries – of which there are nine on the relatively small island of Islay. And it doesn’t take long to do a tour of the latter, the hard bit is finding the way back to your handpicked cottage after the fourth or fifth dram.
Handpicked cottages for 6: Pembrokshire Perfection
Traipse down the Traeth Llyfn steps, pay a visit to Porthgain Harbour and simply switch off from the rest of the world on a stroll along the sands of pretty Pembrokshire in Wales. Venture onto the sea itself in a boat to do a spot of whale and dolphin spotting.
If you’ve little ones with you then a fun day out can very much be had at Folly Farm. Its zoos, fairground and themed play areas will entrance them for hours. At least, that’s often the plan…
Active teenagers who are a dab at surfing the waves may just enjoy a day or two at Freshwater West. And there the whole family will love the fantastic former boat, now award-winning café, known as the Beach Food Shack.
Have we inspired you to spend some family time in a gorgeous get-away in any of the above locations? If so then take a look through the wonderful selection we have at www.handpickedcottages.co.uk. We promise, you won’t be disappointed.
