Built in the 1500s, St Michael’s property is a particularly distinctive boutique self-catering property in Wells-next-the-Sea. This hideaway is ideal for anyone seeking a truly special spot in an excellent town that is close to the beach and services, with a stunning lookout tower that offers breathtaking views of the port and the coast for as far as the eye can reach.
St. Michael’s Cottage is a four-story former merchant’s home constructed of flint and brick in the 16th century. Rich in character, it features an observation tower on the fourth story at the top of the house, offering stunning views of the harbour, the marshes, East Fleet Creek, and the ocean beyond. This location is ideal for daytime viewing of the breathtaking coastline and is as amazing for nighttime stargazing, especially with the telescope and binoculars provided. This beautiful cottage decorated in a neutral palette is set on a no through road right in the heart of Wells-next-the-Sea, on one of the narrow lanes that leads down to the quay, and comes with off street parking for one car and its own sunny south-facing courtyard garden, with a barbecue seating area.
Inside this charming cottage, you’ll find a sitting room with a wood-burning stove, four luxurious bedrooms, two bathrooms, a shower room and two steep Norfolk winder stairs on either side of the house. There is a television room on the third floor that may also be used as a fifth bedroom. By using the couch bed, the space can accommodate 11 people, though this is only advised for children. The bottom floor’s communal kitchen/dining area offers a chance to savour delicious food and chat while remembering the day’s activities. Built into the converted sail loft, the master bedroom is exquisite and offers a true sense of the house’s history with its exposed brickwork walls and gorgeous heavily-beamed ceiling. Now tastefully renovated, St Michael’s Cottage is a distinctive, eccentric vacation rental with lots of personality that offers easygoing yet fashionable living. It is perfect for a quick getaway or an extended stay and can accommodate both families and friends.
St Michael’s Cottage is one of Wells’ oldest buildings and as such there are uneven floor levels and steps both within and outside the property. The staircases inside the property are enclosed, steep, curved and narrow Norfolk winder stairs. We would advise that the house would not be suitable for those less mobile. This cottage is very enchanting, and those who stay will adore the unique character that it comes with.
