Dick Whittington was born at Pauntley Court, which has a rich history. Whittington went on to become Lord Mayor of London four times. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the Dovecote’s entrance to Pauntley Court’s larger formal grounds. In addition to a cloister garden with pleached hornbeams and two deep herbaceous borders, there is a lovely walled garden with a statue of Pan in the middle. The underground garden features a beautiful oak balustrading made by a local craftsman, a box, and beds of roses, tulips, and alliums surrounding an elegant pond. Medlars and quinces contribute to the Elizabethan atmosphere. At the back of the main house is the ruin garden, where foundations of a great house planned by the Somerset family, have been planted in yew. The garden uses stone and local bricks in an artistic manner, which might provide owners of gardens with inspiration, and which ensure even in winter the garden has an elegant bone structure.
The market towns of Newent and Ledbury, the spa towns of Malvern and Cheltenham, the cathedral cities of Gloucester and Hereford, and Tewkesbury Abbey are all easily accessible from the Dovecote, which is situated in the middle of the Gloucestershire countryside.
