Places to Visit in Autumn

Summer may be over, but that does not mean the holidays have to come to an end too. Autumn is a wonderful time to explore all the beautiful places the UK has to offer, with the added bonus of fewer crowds!

With around 48 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty across the UK, there are countless picturesque landscapes to discover. From rolling countryside and peaceful woodland trails to dramatic coastlines and windswept beaches, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the beauty of Britain at your own leisurely pace. And once you have made the most of everything there is to offer, you can snuggle up and enjoy a relaxing evening back at your holiday cottage.

We have gathered some of our favourite autumn destinations, along with some gorgeous properties, to offer plenty of inspiration for your next getaway.

Weekend Breaks

Running out of annual leave? A cosy weekend away is a great way to relax and recharge without using too much of that precious holiday allowance.

Whether you have a family celebration coming up or just fancy escaping the usual routine for a few days, we have properties to suit all kinds of stays. From romantic cottages for two and luxury houses for larger groups, to something a bit more unique like a treehouse stay, there is an abundance to choose from.

It is also the perfect time of year to plan a hot tub getaway. Spend some time relaxing under the stars, then get cosy by the woodburner with a glass of wine or a hot chocolate.

Take a look at our hot tub escapes and see where your next weekend away could take you.

Wales

As the seasons change, Wales takes on a wonderfully peaceful charm. The crowds begin to thin, the landscapes transform into rich seasonal colours, and there is a slower pace in the air. On offer are crisp coastal walks, beautiful countryside and centuries-old castles waiting to be explored (427 to be precise!) If you are looking for a relaxing escape, an autumn break in Wales could be the perfect opportunity to switch off, breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the changing landscape.

Go chasing waterfalls! Autumn rain makes the waterfalls of Bannau Brycheiniog particularly impressive, they are even highlighted by Visit Wales as a must-see at this time of year. If you are keen to meet the local wildlife, the Welsh coast is also excellent for wildlife watching, particularly around Pembrokeshire and Cardigan Bay, where seals and a huge variety of seabirds await. Or why not really make the most of the season with an indulgent Welsh food weekend? Think local cheeses, Welsh cakes, cider, charming pubs with roaring fireplaces and fantastic food festivals. Autumn is a particularly great time for Welsh food events, including the Chocolate Festival of Wales in Llanidloes on Saturday, 24 October.

If we have tempted you to consider Wales for your autumn escape, why not head to Cemaes Bay? Set within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this charming coastal village has been attracting holidaymakers and visitors for generations. Take your time exploring the coastline, spotting local wildlife, visiting the Maritime Museum or simply wandering along the village’s two beautiful beaches.  Sound like your kind of autumn getaway? Ty Glas Beach House offers the perfect base for exploring the stunning Anglesey coastline. This breathtaking property has a private indoor spa and stunning views over the Bay, as well as a games room and plenty of outside space.

If you are after something a bit more traditional, Ty Sinsir in Crickhowell is another great pick. With exposed stone walls, original fireplaces and wooden beams, this cottage sleeps up to eleven people and has a fire pit and wood-fired hot tub to make the most of the chillier evenings.

There is so much more to discover across Wales, so be sure to explore our Welsh guide for more inspiration, hidden gems and must-see destinations.

The Peak District

One of the UK’s best loved National Parks, The Peak District is a wonderful destination for somewhere to while away the hours and soak up the wonders of nature. Spend a day wandering around the picturesque village of Castleton, with its stone cottages, cafés, traditional pubs and independent shops. You can also visit Peveril Castle, or for something a little different, head underground to discover the area’s famous show caves and Blue John stone. If you are a bit more of a thrill seeker then there are opportunities for rock climbing at Stanage Edge or canoeing or kayaking at Carsington Water. Afterwards, retreat to one of the many welcoming country pubs for a warming drink and a hearty meal, the perfect way to round off an autumnal day in the Peaks.

If you are looking for somewhere to gather with friends or family, the gorgeous Broadmea Barn and Stable at Brampton could be perfect. Nestled in the beautiful English countryside and sleeping up to 16 guests, this property also boasts a hot tub and EV charging.

For something a little cosier, Heather Cottage offers luxurious accommodation for three people, not far from the picturesque village of Ashbourne. Your furry friend is even welcome too, so nobody gets left behind!

Weekend for two? The Cabin in Matlock is small but perfectly formed and offers uninterrupted views of the Derbyshire countryside. Wrap up by the firepit in the evening and enjoy a spot of stargazing before settling down for the night in the sumptuous king size bed.

However you choose to spend your time here, the Peak District really does have something for everyone.

The Scottish Highlands and Islands

There is something truly magical about the Scottish Highlands in autumn. As the landscape takes on rich shades of amber and gold, mist settles over the lochs and crisp mornings bring a wonderfully atmospheric feel to the glens.

If you are planning a family break over the October Half Term, then there are plenty of great attractions to keep the little (and big!) kids entertained. Why not visit Highland Wildlife Park, a 260-acre safari park with an amazing range of animals including snow leopards, red pandas and wolves. Or head to Landmark Forest Adventure Park near Carrbridge to ride some of the rollercoasters and maybe even see some dinosaurs! For a more relaxing day, wander the beautiful grounds at Cawdor Castle and Gardens. Located near Nairn, the late fourteenth century tower house is surrounded by three gardens and over ten miles of nature trails.  And for somewhere to stay, check out The Dell Of Rothiemurchus, this pet friendly lodge boasts eleven bedrooms and ten bathrooms as well as a hot tub, fire pit and a games room! More than enough to keep the whole family entertained.

Alternatively, how about this stunning escape on the Isle of Skye? Sleeping up to four guests, The West Nest is a contemporary property that offers an outdoor bathtub with sweeping view over the Outer Hebrides. Whilst in this area you can check out Old Man of Storr, arguably the most iconic walk in Skye, or head to the coast and enjoy the views at Talisker Bay; wild and atmospheric, this beach even has a waterfall cascading down from the high coastal cliffs.
